Information for youth Sailing School
If your kids are new to sailing, we would recommend that they try one of our "Sailing Camps". They are designed to be fun, relaxed classes where the kids have a great first experience sailing. Each of the classes will be primarily taught in X boats and possibly a day in Optimist Dinghys. These boats provide great platforms for teaching young sailors the basics of sailing. Each x boat will have an instructor onboard with two to three students. This will help students gain confidence in their skills while preparing them to continue on with another sailing class or a crewing position. Class size is limited to 8 students. Sailboats are provided. All you need to bring is a U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket. CLYC membership is not required for these classes. (Recommended Age 6-15)
Camp 1 June 4,5,7,8 5:00pm - 7:00pm
Camp 2 June 18-22 8:00am - 9:30 am
Camp 3 August 6-9 9:00am - 11:00am
Cost: $120 per class
This class is designed for our youngest sailors who are interested in spending some time with Mom, Dad or someone else special while floating/sailing around on an Optimist Dinghy. They will learn the very basics about sailing. It is fun, easy to do, and you even get candy. What kid (or parent for that matter) wouldn't love this class. It is recommended for kids 4-7 years of age. Boats are provided for this class at no charge and Membership is not required to take this class.

Beginner Optis- Thursdays and Fridays 12:00am - 2:00pm (June 21-August 9)
Beginner Optis class is designed for first year or second year sailors to get them comfortable on the water. This is a fun, enjoyable class where the students are taught in Optimist Dinghys. They will be sailing primarily with one other student with the goal of getting them comfortable sailing on their own. This class is designed to help your child learn sailing safety, boat parts and rigging, along with terminology. They will learn how to steer, tack, and navigate the wind. The goal is to enable them to get sailing around singlehanded and introduce them to a race course. CLYC membership is not required for these classes. Life jackets are required. Ages 6-12.
Students will not need their own boat for this course. Please contact Heidi Vollmar for further info or with any questions. email@example.com.
Opti Intermediate and Advanced Racers - Thursdays and Fridays 2:00pm - 4:30pm (June 21-August 9)
Once your sailor can sail around (Up and downwind) singlehanded and wants to join in the fun of learning how to race, they are ready for the Intermediate/ Racers course. This intermediate course will focus on teaching your young sailor how to get around a race course and introduce them to racing rules.
The Advanced Racer course is focused on teaching racing skills and tactics.
If your kids are able to sail singlehanded and ready to join the fun of racing, this is the course for them. CLYC junior membership is required for these classes. (Ages 7-12)
They will need their own boat for this course. A CLYC $50 opti usage fee is an option at check out if you do not own your own boat.
420 Sailing Class - Thursdays 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. (June 22, June 29, July 20, August 3 and August 10, 2017)
This is a great program for kids looking for an introductory course to sailing a 420 (both skippers and crews). This is an excellent way to transition from X boat sailing to 420 sailing. The basics of how to rig and sail a boat will be taught along with some other fun activities. The school will provide 420 boats for the class and all you will need to bring is your life jacket, a swimsuit or shorts and a great attitude. You are not required to be a Cedar Lake Yacht Club member to attend.
